The original plan was to race in 62 foot long foiling wing sailed catamarans with a crew of eight. Remember that the AC72 had a crew of 11. On 31 March 2015, the Protocol was changed to replace the AC62 by a 48 foot long boat with a crew of six, to be called the “America’s Cup Class.” Luna Rossa had invested heavily in AC62 design and argued that it was too late to change the class of race yachts. They withdrew when the other challengers outvoted them.
